Cruising Southeast Asia Under Power - and On a Budget

In 2001 we converted MV Lifeline, a commercial cray fishing boat, to a power passagemaker, setting off in 2005 from Brisbane in Australia, through Indonesia, Singapore and Malaysia to Thailand, Borneo, the Philippines and other parts of Southeast Asia. This site tells what we did and how we are doing it - conversion, cruising costs, anchorages and lots more. We know how difficult it is to get information about converting a trawler, cruising long distance in a motor boat and where to travel (by boat) in South East Asia. So Cruising Under Power - Southeast Asia in a Converted Fishing Boat aims to be practical, information-laden, and based on experience - written by cruisers - not web designers (sorry about the layout, photos etc). We hope it is useful and enjoyable.

UPDATE - SEPTEMBER 2014 This site was created 7 years ago to record our adventures cruising Southeast Asia. But we also hoped to encourage would-be budget cruisers that journeying by powerboat is not only as economical as cruising by sailing boat - if you have the right boat - but also the perfect way to see (mostly wind-less) Southeast Asia. Since being based at Sutera Harbour marina in Kota Kinabalu (Sabah, Malaysian Borneo), Lifeline doesn't get out much any more - just an occasional jaunt to the nearby islands and the annual 200nm return trip to the travelift. The rest of the time is spent being a terrific, one bedroom waterfront apartment. I have recently gone through the site and updated some of the information, added new pages etc.....but, no, sorry, you're stuck with this pretty dated-looking layout. From recent emails though, I believe the travel stories are still interesting the anchorage information still unique on the internet and the information about how to design a powerboat for self sufficient cruising on a budget is still as relevant today as it was when written.
