Getting Your Indonesian Cruising Permit (CAIT) and Visas (2005)

C.A.I.T. (Note: English speakers shorten the acronym to "Kate". Indonesians pronounce it as "Chite")

The cruising permit (for the boat) is for three months and begins on the day you nominate in your application.

We used Kustarjono Prodjolalito, whose company name is PT. Kartasa Jaya. The person who actually did the work is called Lytha Kustarjono, who I assume is his wife or daughter. I recommend them unreservedly.

We paid $150(US) for the CAIT and $26 (US) for the sponsor letter.

The process was all done by email while we were in Cairns for a week, with the original being sent to our postal address in Brisbane. We sent the first email about 15 June and the original was dated 29 June. When she posted the original Lytha emailed a coloured photocopy of it to us so we knew it was on its way. I believe the consulate in Darwin will accept this to get the ball rolling for the visa.

Copies of the emails are attached. Note the fee for funds transfer does not apply if you use the National Australia Bank (NAB) but you need some sort of an account with them apparently.

A copy of our CAIT original is also attached.

Details are: PT Kartasa Jaya Phone: 62 21 5358404 Email: cait@indo.net.id

VISA

Your visa (one for each crew member) is for two months and starts on the date you check into Indonesia. It can be extended month by month for up to six months providing you do this before it expires, but no-one can say how much this costs.

You need your CAIT and a sponsor letter to get the two month visa (social and educational visa) from the Indonesian consulate in Darwin. If you do not apply for a two month visa in advance, you are issued with a one month (non extendable) visa when you arrive in Indonesia. The 2 mth visa costs $60AUD (cash.)

The Indonesian consulate in Darwin is located at 18 Harry Chan Avenue, Darwin. NT 0801. Phone number is 89410048. Hours are 9.00am to 4.00pm but are closed for an hour at lunchtime (check this)

I have received your complete documents sent by email.

Our fee of US$ 176,00 (CAIT and sponsor letter) is nett. Meaning that cost of transfer as well as service charge of correspondence's bank is not ours. This correspondence bank charge 13% of total amount transferred. If it is not paid by your end, it will be charge to us and than credited to our account less 13%.

Email 2

Dear Lytha,

Today I have spoken with my bank here in Australia and it seems that there may well be a fee to you for a telegraphic transfer from my bank (St George).

May I just clarify with you that if I send the money by telegraphic transfer from the National Australia Bank (N.A.B.), there will be no charge to you. I was not sure whether you were referring to A national bank, (such as the Commonwealth Bank of Australia) or THE National Bank (N.A.B.).

Please respond as soon as you can so I can transfer the money tomorrow morning.

Thank you.

Sue Goodrick
