Back to "Where We Anchored" Attractive, luxurious facilities (pool, gym, steam bath, library, internet/business centre, restaurant etc), one new washing machine and dryer, drinkable water and power. Fairly close to town with supermarkets, MRT close by. Extremely rolly – try to get a berth as close to club as possible. $S41/night (<$A35) for 15m berth including free use of facilities (except water and power which were inexpensive; washing machine and dryer $S4ea.) Will do clearance in and out for $S15 each way. Also worth investigating One Degree Fifteen marina on Sentosa Island when completed – very well located to city and Western Quarantine anchorage.
8.5m sand. East of the unnamed island to the west of Pulau Pisang. Current runs strongly between the islands (spring tides) and swell comes around the island. With W. and NW. wind all night it was very rolly and bouncy, even with the stabilisers. Southern end of Pisang shallow but would have been better in these conditions.
5.5m sand. Calm in W and NW winds– A little rolly with tide at times. Current-affected gutter across bay to be crossed before snugging into anchorage. Room for 3-4 boats. Eastern side of island towards wharf probably more protected from westerly winds but had to pick way between several large boulders to anchor in 2.5 – 4m. Not good for night entry. Lots of fishing nets as we approached anchorage/island. Approx. 65nm from Pisang Island. Pretty island with little development, beaches. Did not go ashore.
Disneyland building. Beautiful resort facilities (pool, gym, tennis courts etc) included in tariff. No laundry. Power and drinkable water extra but inexpensive. RM51/night (<$A20). Super efficient and pleasant marina manager. Bus or taxi to Port Dickson, an interesting small town. Very good night market at different location each night. Friday and Saturday nights near marina. Coaches (RM12) or taxi (RM 160) to Malacca interesting side trip. Approx. 40nm from Water Islands.
7.5m sandy mud at southern tip of Pulau Angsa. Island and surrounding sandbanks gave good protection from <10kn NE wind with small NW chop. Approx. 50 nm from Port Dickson.
4m sand. Some swell finds its way into the bay. Beautiful island with many small bays with white beaches. Hornbills. Interesting fishing community. Small buses inexpensive. Ferry to Lumut RM 3 – 5. Approx. 75nm from Angsa Island.
8m sand. Calm anchorage in SE wind. Not swelly. Did not go ashore. Slipways in adjacent bay.
5.5m mud off Lumut International Yacht Club. RM5/day to land dinghy at pontoon and use showers and toilets. Convenient to walk into Lumut town and catch bus to Sitiawan. Just up the river is Kampong Bharu and “Mr Chan’s”, both of whom have moorings and mind boats. Also upriver is Fish Co-op where we bought fuel for RM1-50, cheapest fuel so far – close to bowser price.
6-9m sand and mud off Chew clan jetty. Good protected anchorage with good holding. Current rips through here during spring tides, at which time the anchored Burmese fishing boats will drag. Not as dirty as expected. Right in the middle of the best (old) part of town. Close to bus terminal, ferry to Butterworth, ferry to Sumatra. Walking distance to everything in city. New marina also close by but the anchorage was so good we never felt the need to go in. Good supermarkets for provisioning: Makro (cheese), Sunshine Plaza,TESCO (best supermarket in Malaysia or Thailand), BJ’s –all out of town by bus.
5.5m sand in front of Kuah town. Large sheltered-all-round bay. Dinghy dock. Duty free liquor, cigs, chocolate, perfume. Poor provisioning for fresh food at supermarkets. Try “wet market” just out of town.
Attractive buildings and pool. Not overly expensive.
5-6m sand. White beach with small backpacker style resorts and restaurants ashore.
LANGKAWI ISLAND Rebak Resort Marina 9 April
Very still, quiet marina with wifi and beautiful pool on nearby island to Langkawi Is. Also have hardstand (have not used.) Free ferry to Langkawi and vege service. Often have good deals available.
PENANG ISLAND Tanjong City Marina 16 April
Fancy marina right in the middle of Georgetown. Sometimes (weekends?) very rolly. Often have good deals available. Good alternative to Junk anchorage in spring tides when Burmese boats drag anchor. During springs, berth at slack tide (cross current cn be tricky).
PULAU RIMAU Is. At Southern tip of Penang 8 May
6m mud. Good protection from south.
PT KLANG CHANNEL Estuary near Port Klang 10 May 3.00.0’N 101.16’E
16m mud. Good, quiet, protected anchorage.
6m mud. Excellent, protected, convenient anchorage. Water and fuel available at doc. Right near JB city. Many local buses and buses to Singapore R7.50.
6.5m mud. Surprisingly good anchorage at crossroads with Malacca Straits.
6m sand and mud.
11m sand. Slightly rolly anchorage. Pretty island with volcanic cone.
Brand new small marina with water so clear you can see the bottom - and swim in it. Comfortable, tiny, laid back township with few supplies. (If heading across to Borneo, better to stock up, fuel up and water up at mainland Malaysia.
Mooring. Lovely clear water – OK coral even near the boat but the best was around the little island to the west of the bay. Hump headed wrasses, shark and not bad coral.
PULAU AUR In channel between P. Aur and P. Dayang 29 May 2.28.26’N 104.30.57’E
Mooring. Did not go ashore. Snorkelled around small island to west of channel. Interesting deep water boulders. Coral smashed.
